The Best Family Activities in Canmore: Things to Do with Kids - Summer Version!
Planning a family vacation is exciting... until you realize you're trying to keep everyone happy.
Younger kids want places to splash, climb, and explore. Parents want activities that don't require hours of planning. Grandparents want incredible scenery without exhausting hikes.
Fortunately, Canmore is one of the best family destinations in the Canadian Rockies. Whether you're visiting for a weekend or a full week, you'll find plenty of family friendly activities that everyone can enjoy.
After welcoming thousands of families to Hydeaway Stay over the years, we've learned something: the best family days in Canmore usually aren't the busiest. They're the ones filled with simple adventures, beautiful scenery, and plenty of time together.
Here are some of our favourite summer activities with the kids.
Spend the Day at Quarry Lake
If Canmore had an unofficial family headquarters, it would probably be Quarry Lake.
Kids can splash along the shoreline, build rock towers, and play in the water while parents relax on the small beach surrounded by spectacular mountain views. Older children can even try paddleboarding, an exciting small first rock jump for older ones or floating on a hot summer day.
The area features picnic tables, washrooms, accessible pathways, and lots of space for families to spread out.
It's one of the most popular family activities in Canmore for good reason.
Good for: Young children, families, picnics, swimming, strollers, and visitors with mobility limitations.
Walk Along Policeman's Creek and the Bow River
One of the best things about Canmore is that you don't have to hike deep into the mountains to enjoy incredible scenery.
The peaceful Policeman's Creek pathway winds through downtown and connects to the Bow River trail system, making it perfect for younger children, grandparents, and anyone looking for an easy walk. Kids love watching the ducks, crossing the bridges, and exploring the creek, while parents can simply enjoy slowing down and taking in the mountain views.
It's one of our favourite ways to spend an afternoon, especially because it's easy to combine with coffee, ice cream, or lunch downtown.
Explore Downtown Canmore
One of the biggest surprises for first time visitors is just how walkable downtown Canmore is.
Instead of driving everywhere, families can spend hours wandering Main Street, browsing local shops, climbing on the BIG HEAD statue, stopping for pastries, picking up ice cream from an old bus, or finding a sunny patio for lunch.
Sometimes the favourite memories aren't the planned activities—they're the moments between them.
Visit Elevation Place
Every family vacation needs a backup plan.
Especially when the weather doesn't cooperate.
Elevation Place is Canmore's recreation centre and one of the best rainy day activities in town.
Inside you'll find:
- Swimming pool
- Waterslide
- Children's play area
- Indoor climbing wall
- Fitness facilities
Kids burn off energy.
Parents get a chance to relax.
Everyone wins.
Look for Wildlife
For many children, spotting wildlife becomes the highlight of the trip.
The Bow Valley is home to elk, deer, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, and occasionally bears. Simply driving through the valley or exploring some of Canmore's quieter roads often turns into an unexpected wildlife adventure.
Remember to admire animals from a safe distance and never approach or feed them.
Sometimes nature provides the best entertainment.
Hike to Grassi Lakes
If your family is ready for a little adventure, Grassi Lakes is one of the best family hikes in Canmore.
The easier trail is manageable for many families with school aged children and rewards everyone with unbelievably turquoise water at the top.
Because the trail isn't stroller or wheelchair accessible, younger families may prefer the pathways around Quarry Lake or Policeman's Creek instead.
For active families, though, Grassi Lakes is often the highlight of the trip.
Take a Gondola Ride
Want incredible mountain views without the climb?
The nearby Banff Gondola delivers exactly that.
Within minutes you'll be standing high above the Bow Valley enjoying panoramic views across six mountain ranges.
It's a fantastic option for younger children, grandparents, and anyone who wants the full Rocky Mountain experience without a strenuous hike.
Try Paddleboarding
Quarry Lake has become one of Canmore's favourite places to learn paddleboarding.
The calm water makes it ideal for beginners, and many younger children enjoy riding on the front of the board with a parent while older kids gain confidence paddling on their own.
Don't worry about being an expert.
Half the fun is laughing when someone ends up in the water.
Note: See our paddleboarding blog for all the tips and tricks!
End the Day with a Sweet Treat
Every successful family vacation includes snacks.
Fortunately, downtown Canmore has plenty of options.
Grab an ice cream cone, visit a local bakery, browse a candy shop, or enjoy a hot chocolate after a day outdoors.
Those simple moments often become the memories your kids talk about long after the trip is over.
Why Families Love Canmore
The best family vacations aren't about checking attractions off a list.
They're about skipping rocks beside the river.
Watching your kids discover a new hiking trail.
Going for a family bike ride.
Sharing ice cream on Main Street.
Finding a quiet place beside the creek while the mountains tower overhead.
That's what makes Canmore so special.
Whether you're visiting for a weekend getaway or a week exploring the Canadian Rockies, you'll find countless ways to create unforgettable memories together.
Many of these family activities—including downtown Canmore, the Bow River, Policeman's Creek, restaurants, cafés, and local shops—are all within walking distance of Hydeaway Stay, making it the perfect home base for your family's mountain adventure.
